Girlfriend Tries to Surprise Boyfriend With PS5 for Christmas, But Things Don’t Go As Planned

The PlayStation 5 seems like it should be an ideal gift for a gamer during the Christmas holiday season, but one girlfriend learned the hard way that even the chance to give a seemingly perfect gift comes with some risk. She managed to secure a PS5 for her boyfriend, and yet the generous gesture led to holiday heartache.

The PlayStation 5 has remained difficult to find in most stores ever since its release in November 2020. Although Sony believes it may be easier to find a PlayStation 5 soon, a quick check shows no units on hand at large retailers where people typically shop for such items. Stores that do have inventory often offer the console only as part of a bundle, while resellers and bots continue to cut into the limited supply and unload units online at auction sites for a substantial profit.

Against the odds, one girlfriend managed to secure a PS5 for her boyfriend in time for Christmas, then found herself in tears when the young man's parents presented their presents first (a bounty that included a PS5). A TikTok video shows the young woman crying on the couch while talking to her boyfriend as her sister films the occasion. "How did your parents even get it?" the girlfriend asks tearfully. "It's sold out everywhere." The video doesn't explain where the girlfriend acquired one herself, which must have been difficult since the PS5 sells out in less than an hour when Sony sells it directly.

The video also doesn't explain what the girlfriend did with the extra PS5, or what her plans for the big day might have included. Perhaps she wanted to try something similar to a clever parent who came up with a funny way to disguise a PS5 birthday gift.

The main lesson to be learned from one couple's minor tragedy seems to be that coordination with family is important. A study indicated the PS5 was the most in-demand Christmas gift this year, so it makes sense that more than one gift giver might try to be the hero to deliver such a prize to a cherished loved one. A TikTok user (apparently the girlfriend shown in the video) replied in the comments to say she didn't tell her boyfriend's parents about the gift she planned to give because she knew they would tell her not to spend so much on a gift. Maybe this was one case where she should have risked it. In any event, her boyfriend now has a shiny new PS5, along with multiple people in his life who think enough of him to go through the trouble of securing him a PS5. Maybe it's not such a sad story after all.
