Although the original series is still a beloved part of Nickelodeon's past, Are You Afraid of the Dark? co-creator D.J. MacHale explained why it couldn't be made in this day and age.

During an interview with Horror4Kids, MacHale was asked what another Are You Afraid of the Dark? project helmed by him would be like in 2023, to which he replied that "what's digestible today is very different from what it was back then." MacHale further commented that with the increased scrutiny brought about by social media, he wasn't sure that a show like it could be made today. MacHale also brought up the recent Are You Afraid of the Dark? reboot, jokingly remarking that if people didn't like it, they shouldn't blame him and his partner Ned Kandel as they had no involvement with it.

"But I think if I were to do it again, I would bring back the anthology format," MacHale concluded. "Because that really is truly what Are You Afraid of the Dark? is. It's about the storytelling tradition, it's about different stories every week. It's about not having to just wring out a story that maybe there isn't enough story to be wringing out for multiple episodes. I love anthologies. Would that be able to be done today? Maybe not, because it's also very expensive to do anthologies. But if someone said to me, 'D.J., you make your Are You Afraid of the Dark?' I would make an anthology, 'cause I think that's where the real interest was for me. And most people, I think."

The Are You Afraid of the Dark? Reboot

While the reboot goes for single story seasons, its predecessor has left quite a legacy, which actor Luca Padovan — who played Leo in last season's tale, Ghost Island — said he and his costars were lucky to be a part of, as he knows people who grew up with it. "I was a fan of the reboot, so being able to be a part of the Nickelodeon family and the legacy of Are You Afraid of the Dark? it's a blessing, and I'm very lucky to be part of it," Padovan added.

Prior to Padovan's comments, Are You Afraid of the Dark?: Curse of the Shadows star Parker Queenan said in 2021 that it was "really crazy to be a part of [the show]" and trying to make something new from people's memories while keeping the nostalgic feeling was scary but taking on the challenge was exciting.
