Alex Ross Homages Jim Lee’s Iconic X-Men #1 Cover for Uncanny Avengers
Marvel has released a new Alex Ross connecting artwork homaging Jim Lee's iconic X-Men #1 cover for the upcoming Uncanny Avengers series.
Ross' connecting variant will be featured in various Avengers and X-Men titles throughout 2023, beginning with August 2023's Uncanny Avengers #1. The artwork — which features a number of mutant characters fans know and love, including Magneto, Wolverine, Cyclops, Rogue, Psylocke, Gambit, Colossus, Beast, Angel, Storm, Charles Xavier and Jean Grey — homages Lee's X-Men #1 from 1991, which itself was an homage to Jack Kirby's Uncanny X-Men #1 cover from 1963.

"With the X-Men piece, I didn't originally make the design. I copied an existing classic cover design that everybody would know and connect to,” Ross said. "The X-Men piece is showing an accentuation of the action, where it's a split second difference later. Wolverine is completing a full attack swipe and everybody is attacking harder. I added in the bit with lightning coming from Storm, which would be a split second of movement."

On Mar. 24, Marvel also put out a separate connecting variant created by Ross starring Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Similar to the X-Men piece, the connecting variant will be featured in various Avengers and X-Men titles in 2023, beginning with Uncanny Avengers #1. "In the case of the Avengers, I wanted to capture something of the era I grew up with, but also something extensive," the artist explained. "So I captured the first 30 years of that team, from the ‘60s through the ‘80s. I end where 1989 closes. I'm trying to make sure my work is aligning with how the character looked and also the attitudes the characters had."
Marvel Brings Back the Uncanny Avengers
Announced at the "Marvel Unlimited’s X-Men: 60 Uncanny Years Live Virtual Event" on Mar. 16, 2023, the new Uncanny Avengers team will make their official debut at the X-Men's third annual Hellfire Gala before then getting their own series from writer Gerry Duggan and artist Javier Garrón. Members of the team include Captain America/Steve Rogers, Rogue, Deadpool, Quicksilver, Psylocke and Penance and their first mission, which is set around the upcoming "Fall of X" X-Men event, will see them try to prevent a world war after the sudden emergence of a deadly new version of Captain Krakoa.
"Everything we’ve been working towards in our third act is coming to a head this summer,” Duggan previously said. "The Uncanny Avengers have existed to provide an example of unity between humanity and mutantdom, and they will need to work extra hard at that now as relationships and friendships have frayed in the events of FALL OF X." Fans can get their first tease of the new Uncanny Avengers team in May 6, 2023's Free Comic Book Day 2023: Avengers/X-Men #1 by Duggan, Jonathan Hickman, Cassara, Garrón and Valerio Schiti. X-Men: Hellfire Gala 2023 #1 by Duggan, Kris Anka, Joshua Cassara, Russell Dauterman, Adam Kubert, Pepe Larraz, R.B. Silva, Luciano Vecchio and more follows on July 26, 2023.
Both of Ross' connecting variants will go on sale on Aug. 16, 2023.
