Percy Jackson Season 2 Is Already Being Written by Rick Riordan

Percy Jackson and the Olympians creator Rick Riordan revealed that the writers' room is now open for Season 2 of the upcoming series adaptation, which is based on his best-selling fantasy novel series of the same name.

In a blog post on his website RickRiordan.com, Riordan revealed that the Disney+ series has "started work on the writers’ room for season two. This does NOT mean the second season has been green-lit yet. It’s too early for that. But we have been approved to start developing scripts, and I think everyone’s expectation is that a second season will happen if all goes as planned." The author, who serves as a co-writer, creative consultant and executive producer on Percy Jackson, added, "It sure is exciting to be part of the room, though. We’ve broken down the action of the second Percy Jackson book, The Sea of Monsters, into a series of episodes, and have begun outlining what the first episodes would look like. I love imagining the introduction of Tyson, our favorite Cyclops, and it’s so helpful to picture our amazing actors in their on-going roles as I am visualizing the season."

Percy Jackson Season 2 Features the Party Ponies

Riordan also teased fans with what they could expect to see in a potential second season, writing, "A bigger role for Clarisse LaRue, the incredible Dior Goodjohn? Yes, please. More Luke Castellan, aka Charlie Bushnell? Sign me up. Percy (Walker), Grover (Aryan), and Annabeth (Leah) braving the scenes from the second novel . . . I can’t wait. And Party Ponies! While we were filming season one, I explained to Glynn Turman (Chiron) who the Party Ponies were, and he laughed and laughed. He said, 'I think I have some friends I could call.' Can’t wait to see that scene!"

Riordan finished by once again reminding fans that developing scripts for Season 2 did not necessarily mean a Season 2 would happen. "My usual disclaimer: This is all HYPOTHETICAL at this point. We have big plans, but nothing is green-lit (past the writers room) and nothing is set in stone. Fingers crossed, though, the first season does as well as we hope, and leads to an even greater second!" he wrote. "I continue to be in the writers’ room every day, weighing in on every creative decision."

Percy Jackson Wraps Season 1 Filming

Riordan announced in February 2023 that filming on Percy Jackson Season 1 had wrapped. The series is now in post-production, with Industrial Light & Magic working on the visual effects. The first season of Percy Jackson will consist of eight episodes and adapt The Lightning Thief (2005), the first novel in the Camp Half-Blood Chronicles series. Similar to the novel, Percy Jackson Season 1 will follow 12-year-old demigod Percy Jackson (Walker Scobell) as he embarks on a cross-country quest with his friends Annabeth Chase (Leah Jeffries) and Grover (Aryan Simhadri) to track down the lost lightning bolt of Zeus (Lance Reddick) and restore order to Mount Olympus.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians will premiere on Disney+ in 2024.
