I was 20 pounds overweight when I gave birth to my son in 2016. During my pregnancy, I gained another 40 pounds, putting me in the obese category. I indulge in every craving (mostly strawberry biscuits) and ignore the weight. I was overconfident that my postpartum weight would drop, but when it didn’t, I started to think this was just my new normal.
Six months later, I joined a gym. On the first day, I stepped on the scale, and when the number was displayed, I was absolutely amazed. I don’t have abs and they often have to create different exercises specifically for me because I can’t take their regular classes. I was embarrassed but determined, and after 11 months I had lost 30 pounds and felt proud.
However, I was hungry most of the day. In an effort to lose weight, I have been tinkering with the diet. At the time, I was on a vegan diet and quickly transitioned to a pescatarian diet. One day my gym announced that they had moved and could no longer provide daycare for my son. Just like that, my gym days are over. I tried to “self” go to the gym at 5am but it NEVER succeeded. I could barely keep my eyes open let alone train properly.
I let my membership expire and quickly noticed the weight back. I can’t understand how this is happening. I think I’m making healthy meals. A typical day goes like this:
- A piece of sourdough toast with butter and some juice.
- For lunch, I’ll be making vegan nachos that include a starchy substitute for cheese along with black beans, rice, lettuce, and tomatoes served with fries.
- For dinner, I would make another dish with beans or fish with gnocchi.
It continued like this for the next two years, and white wine suddenly entered the picture. Alcohol became a constant in my life and — all of a sudden! —I began to gain more weight. I feel tired all the time; I went to bed at 8 o’clock but woke up exhausted.
At the age of 32, for the first time I thought that this was not the way to live. I decided to address this extreme burnout with my doctor. She ordered the labs, and when the results came back (saving you the details), everything was raised to “red” in EVERY category. I was shocked and embarrassed.
My doctor explained about a “new” diet she heard remarkable things about called keto. She said I should investigate it and advised me to lose weight ASAP. I shrugged and told her I was a pescatarian and I would figure it out. I leave and try to be better. This means I drank less than a glass of wine and that was it.
At the time, my son enrolled in a program that combined home visits with specialist teachers in the area. About a month after my visit to the doctor, one of the teachers I had first met a year earlier arrived. She rang the doorbell and said, “Hello again,” which I thought was odd, since I don’t remember meeting her. Then she said, “I think we met last year,” and I replied, “No, I don’t think so” – and that hit me! She WEIGHT 90 POINTS when we met. I gasped and she said, “Yeah, I lost a little bit”. When the session was almost over, I asked her how she did it and she replied “I did keto, you should try it”
Yet again, I rolled my eyes and said, “We’re ranchers, but I’m glad it worked for you.”
Looking back, I can see a little “push” that pointed me in the right direction, but it wasn’t until a Joe Rogan podcast where one of the guests mentioned keto that I thought… maybe there’s something to this.
The guest mentioned your name and I quickly hit Google to learn more. I don’t know if it will work, but I know I have to try something different. My first step was to introduce the idea of a meat-centric diet—whom it took me a long time to convince to eliminate meat altogether. I found Butcher Box and explained what their standards were like for ethics and that if we ever went back to eating meat, we would do it “the right way”.
Then I bought your book Keto Reset Diet. I listen to every word and follow every suggestion. I downloaded a “keto” app that asked me to add all my meals to it, then it would calculate my net carbs. I decided to change and did it. I bought a Peloton bike for home exercise and am very attached to it.
The first picture you see was taken on August 9, 2019, the second photo was taken on April 1, 2022. I am 5 years old, 9 years old, initial weight is 193 and last is 140. Since After that, I bought two more of your books and countless Primal Kitchen food products. I have no trouble losing weight and maintaining a healthy weight thanks to your techniques. I have told friends and family about your books and encouraged them to try. Now I have become one of those “keto” people.
